In this lesson you will learn how to specify titles and footnotes, change titles and footnotes, and delete titles and footnotes. Perhaps youve already noticed that, by default, all the reports you create using SAS include the title, The SAS System centered at the top of the report. And in certain file formats there is a date-time stamp and page number in the top right hand corner of the report. But, often times adding a title of your choosing to your reports can make them more meaningful, and can help you stay better organized. You can easily add your own titles and footnotes to reports in SAS. In your SAS reports, you can specify up to 10 titles and 10 footnotes. To specify a title you use the title statement. To specify a footnote you use the footnote statement. Other than the keyword at the beginning, the title and footnote statements share the same general form. An article is a large and docHub part of a document often specifically labeled as such see the U.S. Constitution for example. A clause refers to a a much smaller part of the text.
Basically, a contract clause is a written section that unscrambles any contractual confusion. There are many ways to write clauses but while each applies to a different aspect, their goal is ultimately the same to clearly define and outline one specific part of the contract or agreement.
An article is a legal rule that can be set out under a statute, a code, or a paragraph in a legal document. Articles usually refer to matters that have been agreed upon by the supervising authority. For example, in contracts, an article under the UCC can set out a list of contractual obligations between parties.
Footnotes should be placed on the same page as their accompanying text. Footnote numbers are placed in superscript, usually at the end of the sentence. If you are referring to a word, place the footnote number directly after the word.
Simply list the page number of the contract and the relevant section. In some circumstances, you may need to directly quote the contract in a letter instead of just making a reference. Quoting a contract can be useful if the contract includes complex language or is very long.
Rule 10.9(a): Rule of Five for Cases. A short form for a case may only be used if the case is already cited (a) in the same footnote or (b) is cited in either full or short form in one of the preceding five footnotes.
I advocate using footnotes much more commonly than is typical in legal writing. In my view, footnotes can enhance readability by keeping only important information in the main text and avoiding interruptions of an argument or narrative.
Sample: This Agreement is the entire, final, complete, and fully integrated agreement between the Parties with respect to the subject matter hereof and supersedes any prior agreements or communications between the Parties, whether written, oral, electronic or otherwise.
The phrase subject to is used quite a lot in contracts. It indicates to a reader that they should cross reference the current clause they are reading (Clause 1) with another clause elsewhere in the contract (Clause 2). Clause 2 can either be on the same page, a page further ahead or on a preceding page.
Depending on the structure of the contract, a clause may be identified numerically, alphabetically, or by heading. While the term clause most often refers to a specific paragraph of the contract, this is not necessarily true. For complicated issues, a clause might consist of multiple paragraphs.
