Its done via SMS spoofing. The sender can spoof both the phone number and/or email address of the sent message. While I have yet to get a message spoofing my own phone number, Ive gotten plenty of spam emails sent from myself.
Your bank will never send you text messages asking you to confirm your account details or reset your password. Such SMSes are from scammers. Delete the message and avoid clicking the link on the text.
Report it on the messaging app you use. Look for the option to report junk or spam. Copy the message and forward it to 7726 (SPAM). Report it to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
How to block spam texts? Open your messaging app and find the text you want to block. Long-press the message and tap the Block icon. (In some apps, you may need to tap Options (three dots) Block.) Tick Report spam, then tap OK.
Directly replying to a spam text message lets a spammer know that your number is genuine. What happens next They can sell your phone number to other spammers who might bombard you with false promises of free gifts and product offers. Instead, its best to block and report the number.
Why did I get a text from myself? Just recently, scammers have found a way to spoof the number of the person receiving the text message, so that it seems like the message is one you are sending to yourself. If you click on the contact info in the message, it will take you to your own contact info.
Recently, a slew of people have been receiving spam text messages about their carrier bill myself included. The message, which says your bill has been paid, includes a link to a little gift for you. Most users have also reported the text message has been coming from their own personal phone number.
