Hi, my names Taylor and Im from Lucidchart. Today youll be learning all about entity relationship diagrams or ERDs. Were going to start off by discussing a high-level overview, and then together well dive in and build an example together, complete with entities, attributes, relationships, and cardinality. By the end of this video, youll be able to build an entire Entity Relationship Diagram from scratch. Have you ever wondered why you get an error message telling you that your ideal Twitter handle is already taken? Or how Amazon can keep track of so many different orders, and customers, and products? The answers to these questions lies within the creation of a database, which in other words, is a collection of information that is organized so data can be easily stored, managed, updated, and retrieved. Now theres a lot of moving information in a database, and understanding how the many elements of a database interact with each other can be difficult to grasp. Engineers need a v

ERD is short for Entity Relationship Diagram, and they are used to plan and model databases before their creation. ER diagrams are an offshoot of the entity-relationship model, which shows how entities interact in a database. Check out what are the best Entity-relationship tools.
An entity-relationship diagram (ERD) is a data modeling technique that graphically illustrates an information systems entities and the relationships between those entities. An ERD is a conceptual and representational model of data used to represent the entity framework infrastructure.
For example, Anderson (1997) stated more generally: diagrams are pictorial, yet abstract, representations of information, and maps, line graphs, bar charts, engineering blueprints, and architects sketches are all examples of diagrams, whereas photographs and video are not.
An entity relationship diagram (ERD), also known as an entity relationship model, is a graphical representation that depicts relationships among people, objects, places, concepts or events within an information technology (IT) system.
A plan, sketch, drawing, or outline designed to demonstrate or explain how something works or to clarify the relationship between the parts of a whole. 2. Mathematics A graphic representation of an algebraic or geometric relationship. 3. A chart or graph.
The current UML standards call for 13 different types of diagrams: class, activity, object, use case, sequence, package, state, component, communication, composite structure, interaction overview, timing, and deployment.
You read the diagrams first from left to right and then from right to left. In the case of the name-address relationship in following figure, you read the relationships as follows: names can be associated with zero or exactly one address; addresses can be associated with zero, one, or many names.
Naming the Relationship Place a name for the relationship on the line representing the relationship on the E-R diagram. Use a simple but meaningful action verb (e.g., buys, places, takes) to name the relationship.
Naming conventions In our ER diagrams, we will use the convention that entity type and relationship type names are uppercase letters, attribute names have their initial letter capitalized, and role names are lowercase letters.
For the traditional naming convention: Database names must only consist of the letters a to z (both lower and upper case allowed), the numbers 0 to 9 , and the underscore ( ) or dash ( - ) symbols. This also means that any non-ASCII database names are not allowed. Database names must always start with a letter.
