Columns are used for structural reinforcement, much like beams. Columns are, basically, vertical structures transmit the compressive loads. The floor and the columns on the floors above are supported by columns; the columns of the bottom floor must be large enough to bear the accumulative weight of each floor above it.
Lets look at five kinds of layout grids; manuscript, column, baseline, modular and hierarchical. Manuscript Grids are used in documents, ebooks, pdfs and presentations with lots of text. Column Grids are used for magazines to organize content in columns so it is easier to read.
Design of Column by Working Stress Method Load carrying capacity for short column. Load carrying capacity for long column. A column with helical reinforcement. Longitudinal reinforcement. Minimum number of bars for reinforcement. Minimum diameter of bar 12 mm. Maximum distance between longitudinal bar 300 mm. Pedestal.
The number 12 is the most easily divisible among reasonably small numbers; its possible to have 12, 6, 4, 3, 2 or 1 evenly spaced columns. This gives designers tremendous flexibility over a layout. While the 12-column grid is a popular choice among many designers, its not a one-size-fits-all solution.
There are three different forms of grids to choose from: grid (uniform grid), column, and row.
In graphic design, a grid is a structure (usually two-dimensional) made up of a series of intersecting straight (vertical, horizontal, and angular) or curved lines (grid lines) used to structure content.
Two kinds of nonprinting grids are available: a baseline grid for aligning columns of text, and a document grid for aligning objects.
There are four main types of grids in design. They are manuscript, column, modular and hierarchical grids.
