A field type, also known as a semantic type, is the meaning of a field (or column) in a table. The field type determines how Metabase displays the field. For example, a columns data type might be text, but its field type could be URL. Metabase would then display the column values as links.
To demonstrate this issue: Create a table with a field of type Currency. In the lower pane of table design view, set the Format property to Currency. Save the table, and close the database. Open the Windows Control Panel. Go to Regional Options, and change the Currency setting. Open your database again.
Select a table. Select Click to Add Calculated Field, and then select a data type. Enter a calculation for the field, and then click OK.
With number and currency formatting you have three choices: keep the default formats, apply a predefined format, or create a custom format. Open the query in Design View. Right-click the date field, and then click Properties. In the Property Sheet, select the format you want from the Format property list.
Add a Number or Currency field in Datasheet view Open the table in Datasheet View. If necessary, scroll horizontally to the first blank field. Double-click the header row, and then type a name for the new field. Select Click to Add and then select Number, Large Number, or Currency from the list.
Right-click the date field, and then click Properties. In the Property Sheet, select the format you want from the Format property list.
A Currency field is accurate to 15 digits to the left of the decimal point and 4 digits to the right. Each Currency field value requires 8 bytes of storage.
For number fields, the field size determines exactly how much disk space Access uses for each value of the field. For text fields, the field size determines the maximum amount of disk space that Access allows for each value of the field.
