When this occurs, a special symbol, such as 10 for liability or 7 for physical damage coverage, is used and added to the policy by an endorsement. The endorsement must contain a complete explanation/description of what the symbol means.
Symbol 9 is used to cover non-owned autos for liability. Non-owned autos are vehicles you use in your business but do not own, hire, rent, lease, or borrow. Examples are vehicles that are owned by your employees or partners and used in your business.
Symbol 9 Non-owned Auto Coverage Coverage is provided only for vehicles that the business does not own, rent, lease, borrow, or hire but are used for your business. Personal vehicles owned by employees and used for business purposes are covered under this symbol type.
Symbol 1 is the broadest any auto. Symbol 9 provides coverage for non-owned vehicles only. Using symbol 7 reduces the coverage to claims from vehicles listed on the policy only. Insurers sometimes use combination of symbols 8 and 9, for example, to provide coverage for hired and non-owned autos.
If Symbol 1 is not available for whatever reason, use 2, 8 and 9; the combination does not completely provide the same breadth of protection, but it is very close.
Symbol 7: Scheduled Vehicles The most common type of coverage purchased for Business Auto is Symbol 7 Symbol 7 coverage refers to any scheduled or listed vehicles on your policy. It is like Personal Auto coverage.
9 = Covers autos that the insured does not own, lease, hire, rent or borrow, but are used for business purposes. These autos may be owned by employees or family members, but must be used for the insureds business or personal matters. ( NON-OWNED AUTOS ONLY)
Definition: Covered Auto Symbols. The Business Auto Policy uses numeric symbols to indicate the types of vehicles for which coverage is in effect. Only those symbols listed for a coverage can be used. Symbols 1 through 6 provide vehicle automatic coverage.
