Once your vessel is USCG documented, all you need to transfer the ownership is to submit a copy of the Certification of Documentation which includes the owners signature. Also, the copy of the certificate of documentation must be docHubd. A bill of sale will be needed (see below).
To facilitate the sale of a US Coast Guard Documented Vessel, you must either complete and docHub the CG-1340 Bill of Sale OR complete and docHub the second page (back side) of the CG-1270 Certificate of Documentation. NOTE: ALL managing owners must be listed on the CG-1340 Bill of Sale.
A CG-1258 form is owned by the United States Coast Guard. It is used by the vessel owners when applying for initial issue, exchange, or replacement of Certificate of Documentation. It is completed by the owner of the boat that is supposed to be recorded or re-documented.
Exchange - is the term used when changes are made to the Certificate of Documentation (COD) for a vessel which is currently documented with the U.S. Coast Guard. The changes may include ownership, vessel name, hailing port, and/or endorsement(s).
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) provides the guidelines for transferring ownership of a documented vessel. Both current and prior owners must fill out a new registration card (also known as Transfer Form CG-1270). A bill of sale must be accompanied by documentation that you own the vessel you are selling.
The Transfer of Ownership Form CG-1258 is utilized when: Purchasing/transferring a vessel: When the sale is finalized you may complete a U.S. Coast Guard Bill of Sale (CG-1340). If there is an outstanding mortgage, the mortgagee (lender) should complete a Satisfaction of Mortgage.
In order to change the name of a US Coast Guard Documented Vessel, you must first complete the appropriate forms required to update the National Vessel Documentation Centers database with the new vessel name (CG-1258). Once filed and returned, you may remove the previous name and add the new name.
No, Coast Guard Documented vessels do not have titles, but they hold Certificates of Documentation in their stead. Federal law prohibits Documented vessels from possessing State titles, as the Federal Documentation supersedes all State registration.
