You need to tell your line manager or HR team about a death if you need to take time off work. You may find it easier to send an email or text rather than speak on the phone or see them in person. Most employers will be supportive, and it can be useful for them to know how youre getting on.
Tell or email your boss that a family member passed away. Dont worry about looking or sounding emotionalits completely okay to be vulnerable and upset while youre grieving. Let your boss or HR rep know that a loved one passed away recently, and that youll need some time off to grieve and go to the funeral.
Also, employers may allow employees to take different amounts of time off depending on how closely associated the employee was with the loved one. For example, an employer may allow an employee to take three (3) days of bereavement leave for the death of a child, but only one day for the death of a niece.
Dear Company Team, I am writing to share that I have experienced a loss in my family and will be on bereavement leave for the remainder of the week. This is a difficult time for us, and I appreciate you respecting my familys privacy at this time.
Sympathy Email Etiquette Express your sympathy Im so sorry for your loss. Talk about the decedent [Name] was a great person and will be sorely missed. Find words of comfort and solidarity Im thinking of you; were praying for you; you and your family are in our hearts.
Dear [Manager], I am writing to inform you that [name of loved one and relationship to you] has passed away. I would like to formally request three days of paid leave to travel to [location], arrange funeral plans, and spend time with my family.

Further expanding generous protected employee leaves, California now will require most private employers to provide up to five days of bereavement leave for a covered family members death. Assembly Bill 1949, which Governor Newsom signed, takes effect on January 1, 2023.
