In the week since I filmed my last video on internships and Coronavirus, even more has progressed. As we all knew it would. As companies continue to evaluate what their next steps are going to be, as a result of COVID-19, some are pushing decisions out, and postponing and deferring their internships. Some are shifting them to online, remote internships. And others have made the tough call to cancel their upcoming internship program altogether. In the coming weeks (and months) we will learn even more. But in the meantime, what can you be doing as a student if your internship has been canceled? Thats what Im going to cover in this video. Because you do have options. You can be productive with this time. And you can still take control of your future, without an internship. And if this is the future, and youve stumbled upon this video after the Coronavirus outbreak has slowed down, and life has gone back to normal. Once you have reviewed everything and are sure that the internship offer is not the best fit for you, you can decline it. Decline the emails in a similar manner you accept them. The key is to maintain a professional attitude and be grateful.
As a general rule, its a good idea to remove internships from your resume if they were completed more than five to seven years ago. This is especially true if you have gained a docHub amount of professional experience since then that is more relevant to your current career goals.
If you want to leave your internship contract but are outside of the trial period, the intern is obliged to notify the company of the termination in writing in three main ways: By registered letter or recorded delivery, with acknowledgement of receipt. By delivering the letter personally against a receipt.
While reneging is not illegal, it is highly unethical. It will harm your professional reputation. This can have lasting impacts on your future career with career goals and career paths. If you renege on an internship position offer, you will be barred from that company and any sister or parent companies.
Youve Received An Offer, but Hold On! If you have applied to multiple internships, dont feel pressured to accept the first offer that you receive. The worst thing you can do is to accept an offer and then renege later. Its perfectly acceptable to take two or three days to decide, or more if necessary.
In addition, accepting an offer but later rejecting it, if you receive a better offer (reneging) is unethical. Reneging can severely tarnish your professional reputation, not only in the short term, but also for the duration of your career.
Set some time aside with them to announce your resignation, give two weeks notice, and express your gratitude for having the opportunity. Bring it up naturally and make it conversational. If asked, speak succinctly and truthfully about quitting your internship. Secure a letter of recommendation.
Once you have accepted a position, stay firm in your decision. If you have signed a contract from an organization, they might have specific penalties for students who renege on the offer. It also reflects poorly on you and will negatively impact opportunities for fellow Trojans if you renege on an accepted offer.
