If you need to change or cancel your out-patient appointment and were referred through the NHS e-Referral Service you should ring the NHS Appointments Line on 0345 608 8888 or visit .nhs.uk/referrals to rebook or cancel the appointment.
Its important that you follow up immediately not only to thank your customer, but also to find out why they gave you a referral in the first place! We have previously discussed times you should always ask for a referral (see Dont Be Afraid to Ask).
In order to cancel a referral, the referrer must log into e-RS as a referring clinician and search for the patients NHS number or UBRN. A list of outstanding referrals will be displayed below the patient details. Select Cancel Request from the options and a new page will load showing a summary of the referral.
While a bad reference can severely harm an applicants chances of getting hired, they are not usually illegal. There are no state or federal laws that prohibit an employer, a coworker, or anyone else from providing a poor reference for someone else.
If referrals are rejected, the provider should give clear information as to why they do not feel that their service is suitable for the patient and suggest an alternative provider or method of managing the patient.
If the patient refuses the referral, have the patient sign an informed refusal form once you have verbally reviewed the risks, benefits and alternatives of not proceeding with the recommended referral.
As part of this review process, a provider can choose to reject the referral if they feel its inappropriate for their service or they require additional referral information to make a decision.
You can click the red arrows on the right hand side of the Referral to see more details about each Referral. To delete a Referral, put a tick in the relevant box and click the Delete Selected Referrals/Contacts button.
