Even if they have authorization to search a suspects phone, most modern devices lock their data using passcodes or biometric identification. Law enforcement in many countries uses specialized tools produced by private intelligence companies with names like Grayshift or Cellebrite. If youre a Legacy Contact for a family member or friend who passed awayand you have both the unique access key they created when they added you as a Legacy Contact and their death certificate*you can start a request right on your device or on the Digital Legacy - Request Access page.
For security, Apple requires and verifies legal documentation before we can assist with a deceased persons account. This generally includes a death certificate,* and may also require a court order or other documentation.
In the United States and other locales, you can request access to your deceased loved ones Apple ID and data with a court order. The court order needs to claim you as the rightful inheritor of your relatives personal information.
The situation may lead you to ask, if someone dies, can you unlock their phone? The answer is yes, and the process depends on their phones operating system. Before reading further, check whether your loved one left behind a death binder with a list of their accounts and passwords.
A provider should close the deceased persons account on request. You shouldnt have to pay a penalty fee (also known as an Early Termination Charge or ETC), although business accounts may be treated differently.
Contracts do not automatically disconnect upon death. The account remains active and unless the phone is leased or on a pay for use contract, it is considered property of the estate. If the issue is not addressed, the phone will keep charging the deceaseds estate the monthly fee.
Sometimes the simplest solution is best. The best way to share your passwords is to write them down on paper, store them in a fireproof box next to your other sensitive documents, and let someone you trust know how to access them. Thats the short answer.
Youll need to go to the website and provide: Your name. The name and email of the person who has died. Link to their account or their profile information. Proof of death (obituary/news articles/death certificate). Proof of your relationship to the person (unless your name appeared in the obituary).
