Brokerage will be charged on both sides, i.e. when the options are bought and when they are settled on the expiry day. Contracts expiring OTM - OTM option contracts expire worthlessly. The entire amount paid as a premium will be lost.
Exercising a stock option means purchasing the issuers common stock at the price set by the option (grant price), regardless of the stocks price at the time you exercise the option. See About Stock Options for more information.
When a put option expires in the money, the contract holders stake in the underlying security is sold at the strike price, provided the investor owns shares. If the investor doesnt, a short position is initiated at the strike price.
An option assignment represents the sellers obligation to fulfill the terms of the contract by either selling or buying the underlying security at the exercise price. This obligation is triggered when the buyer of an option contract exercises their right to buy or sell the underlying security.
The option expires worthless, and the contract holders maximum loss is the amount of the premium paid. If the stock is selling below the strike price, it is in the money. The owner of the option can sell it for a premium or exercise the long put.
To avoid that from happening to you when you are short the option, all you need to do is buy it back before it expires, and no harm will be done. You wont lose much money even if an exercise takes place, but sometimes commissions are a little greater when there is an exercise.
If an investor owns a put option as well as shares in a stock, what happens when the put is in the money at expiration? Simple, the shares will be automatically sold by the investors broker at the strike price.
Put options are in the money when the stock price is below the strike price at expiration. The put owner may exercise the option, selling the stock at the strike price. Or the owner can sell the put option to another buyer prior to expiration at fair market value.
