So for me, put a lot of emphasis on making the selection, I can give you some tips on how to think about it. At Stanford we request two, in one we ask for a current direct supervisor, or the best alternative, if that is impossible or inappropriate. And for the second recommendation, we also ask for someone whos supervised your work, but it could be from a nonprofit, it could be extracurricular, or from the same organization. And when you think about selecting them what you really, just as Ive asked applicants in their essays to tell us about the impact that theyve had, because this past behavior will predict future behavior, thats the echo that we want to see in a reference. If you need to make changes to a submitted recommendation, you can do so only if the applicant has not submitted their final application to their school. If the applicant has submitted their final application, the school has already received the recommendation and changes cannot be made.
The closing of the letter should briefly summarize previous points and clearly state that you recommend the candidate for employment (or graduate school, etc.). Finally, you want to give them your contact information in case they want to contact you directly.
Some recommenders may wish to write an updated letter when you apply in a subsequent reporting year or to a different type of program. A recommender may decide to rescind a letter after becoming aware that it has been repurposed, if permission to reuse the letter has not been requested and granted.
Conclude with a sincere statement recommending the student to the specific college or university. If the student is sending the letter to a single institution, mention the school in your conclusion.
If you are writing a personal letter of reference, include a salutation (Dear Dr. Smith, Dear Mr. Jones, etc.). If you are writing a general reference letter, say To Whom it May Concern or simply dont include a salutation.

In addition to your email address and phone number, consider adding your job title and work address.
