A polygraph test measures and records the physiological responses of a subject while he or she answers a series of questions. Careful analysis of the physiological responses can indicate when the person is lying.
Analogous to the Likert scale is the polygraphic 7-position scoring: 3 (strongly deceptive), -2 (deceptive), -1 (somewhat deceptive), 0 (neutral), +1 (somewhat truthful), +2 (truthful), and +3 (strongly truthful).
Security Executive Agent Directive 4, the government-wide policy governing security clearance adjudications, explicitly prohibits federal agencies from denying or revoking a security clearance based solely on polygraph technical calls without the presence of adjudicatively-docHub information.
Strictly speaking, it is impossible in many countries to fail a polygraph. Nevertheless, there are several ways that an individual can be seen to fail the test. In this article, we discuss failed polygraph scenarios and the appeal procedure, based on our own direct experience.
There are several factors that could cause the results of a polygraph examination to be rendered as Inconclusive. Some of these factors include improper question formulation based on bad case facts. The lack of fear by the examinee of getting caught in a lie is sometimes a reason for this result.
A polygraphs output consists of a set of squiggly lines on a computer screen, each indicating one function being tested. The functions most commonly measured are blood pressure, breathing rate, pulse, and perspiration, all of which tend to increase when you lie.
Here are some tips to try: If you want to beat the test, your best bet is to stay upset, fearful and confused throughout the entire test. Take time before answering any question. Alter your breathing during control questions, but return to normal breathing before answering the next question.
The negative values indicate higher reaction on the relevant questions and the positive values indicate higher response on the control questions. A grand total score of +6 and greater indicates nondeception, -6 and less deception, and anything in between is considered an inconclusive result.
