Over time a headstone may settle or its fixings weaken. After several instances where unstable stones have fallen in dangerous circumstances, some burial authorities topple test headstones by firm pressure to check for stability. They may then tape them off or flatten them.
A headstone should only be removed from the graveyard by a community-based group or local official acting within the limits of local and state law or operating with the knowledge of the descendants of the deceased. In most circumstances, it is preferable to repair a headstone rather than remove it.
Whether the inscription has faded or the stone has cracks or chips, it can be repaired. Even a large amount of damage in the headstone can be repaired and restored so it looks beautiful for years to come. Some headstones can also be reused, i.e. additional inscriptions can be added on the existing gravestones.
In such a case the burial and its headstone are given the lift and deepen treatment. The existing burial is removed and replaced lower down in the grave so that another burial can be included on top. The headstone is either smashed and buried with them, or removed to an inconspicuous place.
Memorials made of bronze can be refinished. Memorials made of either granite and marble can also be resurfaced.
Note: Marble and granite headstones or markers that are replaced and removed from a grave must be destroyed to make sure that the inscription is no longer readable.

In most cases, additions to existing headstones are made at the cemetery. This helps avoid any damage to the stone that may happen in transit. However, some more complex additions may require us to take the stone back to our workshop, make the addition, and bring it back to the cemetery.
