- I was told I was getting a job and then that job offer was revoked. I made one fatal mistake. And after coaching thousands of people in the job search as a career strategist, Ive seen that you may have made this mistake too. Here is the story of what happened to me, my biggest regret, and there is a twist ending that you wont see coming. This is Self Made Millennial, Im Madeline Mann. Im a human resources leader and job search strategist. You may have seen me in these places, new videos on Thursdays. This all begins where I was interviewing for a job that truly seemed perfect. It was the right title, it was a really easy commute, 10 minutes away from where I lived, and seemed like a great company in my target industry. I got on to the first round interview and the recruiter, his name is Michael, he was talking to me and he said, wow, you are absolutely the perfect candidate for this role, Im so excited to pass you along to the hiring team for a second round interview. Yes. Technically, anyone can turn down a job offer, back out of a job already started, or renege on an acceptance at any point. Most states operate with what is called at will employment. This means the employee and the employer are not in a binding contract.
Dear [Contact Name], I want to thank you for your time and offer to join the [department name] team at [company name]. I regret to inform you that after further consideration, I will have to withdraw my acceptance for the role of [position title] with the company.
Dont say you cant start on that date but instead ask if there is room for negotiation. Be prepared to offer a solid reason as to why you have to postpone the start date. Then, ask if theres any flexibility. Chances are that if its a valid reason, your new employer will work with you on a new date start.
Life happens, and its better to delay the date and come in ready to rock than show up for a day and then have to call out. If you did discuss the start date at length before accepting, even if you didnt negotiate a new one, your new employers might be surprised at the change. But if you need the time, you can ask.
You may ask for an extension. The employer does not have to grant it. Make sure you have a concrete and appropriate reason for asking for an extension. Expecting to hear soon from another employer with whom youve interviewed is a legitimate reason.
Negotiating your start date may cause your employer to push back their original start date to a week or a month later. This may be the only option as some employers have specific onboarding schedules for new hires that occur on set dates.
You can ask, sure. If its a small change they will probably let you have it. If its many months they may be a bit fed up. They are under no obligation to let you have it.
Options for Asking to Delay Your Start Date Reasons for postponing the start date might include a contractual obligation with your current employer or company policy which requires a longer period of notification. Explain the circumstances to the employer, and ask if there is any flexibility.
