Option + Command + Delete. This shortcut deletes the file permanently and immediately, meaning that it is not sent to Trash but removed from Mac right away. Note that if you use it, this action cannot be undone.
To remove a directory and all its contents, including any subdirectories and files, use the rm command with the recursive option, -r . Directories that are removed with the rmdir command cannot be recovered, nor can directories and their contents removed with the rm -r command.
Move or delete files Delete music, movies, podcasts, or other media, especially if its media that you can stream or download again as needed. Delete files in your Downloads folder. If you use the Mail app for your email, choose Mailbox Erase Junk Mail from the menu bar in Mail.
When a file is locked, you need to unlock it first in order to move it to Trash. Ctrl-click the file you cannot delete and select Get Info. Expand the General tab and find the Locked checkbox. Deselect it if its turned on. Go back to select the file and delete it again.
The rm command removes the entries for a specified file, group of files, or certain select files from a list within a directory. User confirmation, read permission, and write permission are not required before a file is removed when you use the rm command.
When youre in the same directory as the file you want to delete, type rm [filename. extension] If you want to delete multiple files at once, list them all, but make sure theres a space between each one. Press Return to execute the command.
How to Delete Folders on Mac Using Terminal Launch Terminal via Spotlight. In Terminal, type the command rm -r foldername . Replace foldername with the exact name of the folder. If the folder name has spaces, you need to put it in quotes. For instance, rm -r my folder.
