What Is Buy to Close? Buy to close refers to terminology that traders, primarily option traders, use to exit an existing short position. In market parlance, it is understood to mean that the trader wants to close out an existing option trade.
Buyers of an option position should be aware of time decay effects and should close the positions as a stop-loss measure if entering the last month of expiry with no clarity on a big change in valuations. Time decay can erode a lot of money, even if the underlying price moves substantially.
Buying to open is when you purchase a new options contract and assume either a long or short position. Conversely, buying to close is when you purchase an existing options contract that matches a contract you sold. In doing so you offset your existing contract and exit your position.
How do you close a put option? If you sold the put to open the trade, then you will buy the put at the current market price to close it. If you originally bought the put option, then you will sell it to close the trade. An options expiration or exercise will also close the trade for both parties involved.
Buy-to-close (BTC) orders pay a debit and close a position that was opened selling options. Sell-to-close (STC) orders receive a credit and close a position that was opened buying options. The premium paid or collected, relative to the opening order, determines your profit or loss on a trade.
You can buy or sell to close the position prior to expiration. The options expire out-of-the-money and worthless, so you do nothing. The options expire in-the-money, usually resulting in a trade of the underlying stock if the option is exercised.
Buy to close: If the March of 2022 comes and the price is still higher than $1,000, you can end your obligation within the contract by buying those 10 shares back at the current price and closing the contract. This way, you close out the risk of the price going even higher in the future.
When you find a stock that has better fundamentals than the one you are holding on to now, it is a good time to exit the stock. This also means that the company is doing better and coming up with better products or services that can grab better opportunities.
