A canceled check is one that has been cleared by cashing or depositing it, rendering the check null and void for further transactions and cannot be re-used. A canceled check indicates that the clearing process has been complete, and so canceled checks can be used as proof of payment.
Generally, if your bank credited your account, it can later reverse the funds if the check is found to be fraudulent. You should check your deposit account agreement for information on the banks policies regarding fraudulent checks.
Once a check has cleared, it cannot be reversed unless fraud or identity theft is suspected. However, many banks will make the first $225 of a check deposit available for immediate use.
Common reasons for placing a hold on a check or deposit include but are not limited to: Accounts with frequent overdrafts. New customer. High-dollar deposits that exceed the total available balance in the account.
Can you cancel a deposit? You may only cancel a deposit if it hasnt yet been sent for processing, and the window of time to do so is narrow. At some banks, transfers are sent for processing Monday through Friday at 4 p.m. Eastern time. Some banks allow you to cancel deposits online, while others require you to call.
Can a Cleared Check Be Reversed? If a check deposited clears, it technically cannot be reversed. Once the recipient cashes the check, there is little a payer can do to reverse the funds being transferred. There are infrequent exceptions in extraordinary circumstances.
If a check bounces, fraud protection does not cover it, so the account holder is responsible for repaying the funds even if they have already withdrawn them from their account. Once a check is cleared, the payer cant reverse it and get their money back.
