So maybe you you work for a museum, zoo aquarium and you are asking your visitors where theyamp;#39;re coming from. Youamp;#39;re asking them for zip codes and at the end of the year you have thousands of ZIP codes that you need to analyze. And Iamp;#39;m showing you some ways that you can get some great information from them for free using Excel. The software you probably already have access to and work with almost every day. You donamp;#39;t need anything fancy for this, just Microsoft Excel. If you havenamp;#39;t downloaded the United States ZIP code database from unitedstateszipcodes.org. Display numbers as postal codes Select the cell or range of cells that you want to format. To cancel a selection of cells, click any cell on the worksheet. On the Home tab, click the Dialog Box Launcher next to Number. In the Category box, click Special. In the Type list, click Zip Code or Zip Code + 4.
Create the map chart Once you finish arranging your data, select the cells you want to turn into the map. Then on the Insert tab, go to Charts Maps Filled Map. Here Excel reads the ZIP codes you entered and creates a map chart based on them.
You can format a cell or range of cells to display leading characters so that the postal code is preceded by enough characters to fill the cells width. For example, you can use zeros or dashes to display a postal code as follows: 0000000 98052 or ------- 98052.

Apply a predefined postal code format to numbers Select the cell or range of cells that you want to format. On the Home tab, next to General, in the Number Format box. In the Format Cells dialog box, under Category, click Special. In the Type list, click Zip Code or Zip Code + 4.
Shorten to Five Digits Insert a new column to the right of your current zip code column. Type or copy and paste =LEFT(C2,5) , replacing C2 with your cells identifier. Drag the formula down the rest of your column.
Create a Map chart with Data Types Map charts have gotten even easier with geography data types. Simply input a list of geographic values, such as country, state, county, city, postal code, and so on, then select your list and go to the Data tab Data Types Geography.
Click on Data from the menu ribbon. Then click on Sort. A Sort Warning pop-up menu will appear. Leave Expand the selection default selected and click Sort.
