WHAT IS A LUT AND HOW DOES IT WORK? LUTs (Lookup Tables) are a kind of color filter you use to alter the colors in your image. They apply predetermined sets of mathematical formulas to your videos existing colors to change those colors and achieve a desired result.
Shoot to the right; you will want to shoot a full stop to as many as two and a half stops overexposed when you are shooting a log. Shooting to the right will pull the shadows up and make it less likely that there is grain or noise in your shadows.
A default color profile (left) suffers from loss of detail in both the highlights and the shadows. A log color profile (right) preserves more detail, effectively giving your footage a wider dynamic range.
What is log video? Log is short for logarithmic. A log picture profile on your camera uses a different type of gamma curve than a standard profile such as Rec. 709. The benefit of shooting in log is that your video files will have a higher dynamic range.
What is Log Footage? To put it simply, Logarithmic Footage, generally known as Log, is very flat footage but that contains more details of the scene its baking into the image. This kind of footage is not intended to be used without editing so it needs further alterations to be used as the final footage.
Log grading is specifically used when the footage has been shot in a log format, which is a type of video format that preserves more details in the shadows and highlights of the image. In log grading, the colorist adjusts the colors in the log footage to make them appear more natural and balanced.
On a traditional waveform monitor the flesh line is at 55 to 60 IRE. However, white skin renders best at 60 to 70, while brown skin may show better at 48 to 52 IRE. Darker subjects or scenes may render best at 40 to 48 IRE in order to keep other values in check, like shadows and highlight details.
Shooting in LOG offers a much broader dynamic range and color depth compared to compressed video formats. While compressed formats are smaller in file size and easier to handle, they lose docHub image detail and color information during the compression process.
