Tin is found in two allotropes: alpha-tin and beta-tin. Alpha-tin is a brittle, dull, powdery, semimetallic form of tin. It is made when very pure tin is cooled. Beta-tin is the normal shiny, soft, conductive, metallic form.
It is a silver-white, malleable, and relatively soft metal. Tin ore is typically found in nature in the form of minerals like cassiterite (tin dioxide), which is the primary source of commercially mined tin. For a metal, it has a relatively low melting point and a density of about 7.3 g/cm3.
It is a chemical reaction of the metal surface with the oxygen present in the air that causes some of the metal to corrode (or oxidize) and form the respective metal oxide on the surface. In some metals such as steel, the corrosion products formed are very visible and loose.
Tin is a soft metal with a shiny surface.
Use grade #000 steel wool and denatured alcohol or lacquer thinner. Scrub the tin with the solvent and steel wool thoroughly then rinse and dry. Now brush on the tin ager until you have the aging effect you are looking for. This step may take a few minutes depending on how dark you want your piece to look.
It may be carried out by hot dipping or electroplating. Tinplate made via hot-dipped tin plating is made by cold rolling steel or iron, pickling or remove any scale, annealing to remove any strain hardening, and then coating it with a thin layer of tin. The attached figure shows the tinning process steps.
tin (Sn), a chemical element belonging to the carbon family, Group 14 (IVa) of the periodic table. It is a soft, silvery white metal with a bluish tinge, known to the ancients in bronze, an alloy with copper.
Tin is lustrous, silvery-white, ductile and malleable and it does not easily oxidize in air, so it is used as a coating for other metals to prevent corrosion.
