Blackened steel is simply when metal goes through a process to give it a darker finish than its original color. There are multiple methods that can be used to achieve a blackened aesthetic, such as using hot chemicals or oil.
Tin is not easily oxidized and resists corrosion because it is protected by an oxide film. Tin resists corrosion from distilled sea and soft tap water, and can be attacked by strong acids, alkalis and acid salts. Tin is used in for can coating: tin-plated steel containers are widely used for food preservation.
Anodize objects made with pure aluminum and aluminum alloys using acid and electricity. Then use metal fiber dye to give your object a specific color. Use a flame to alter the colors of metal objects made with steel, copper, or iron. You cant choose which colors appear, but they can still be beautiful.
Use grade #000 steel wool and denatured alcohol or lacquer thinner. Scrub the tin with the solvent and steel wool thoroughly then rinse and dry. Now brush on the tin ager until you have the aging effect you are looking for. This step may take a few minutes depending on how dark you want your piece to look.
The NaOH (caustic soda) and elevated temperature cause Fe3O4 (black oxide) to form on the surface of the metal instead of Fe2O3 (red oxide; rust).
Add 1 Red Solo Cup of boiled linseed oil to your paint can full of melted beeswax. The linseed oil does a good job of darkening the piece and really sealing it in.
Submerge The Metal In White Vinegar Add your white vinegar to your clean, dry container so there is enough to fully submerge the metal. Then add an equal amount of salt to the vinegar, thoroughly stir the mixture, and place the metal so it can sit in the mixture and create a vinegar and patina.
