How to seal wood without darkening the natural color: Sand with a very high grit - the higher the better! Clean with Krud Kutter. Water down white paint and lightly whitewash the wood. Use a sponge brush to eliminate brush strokes, and apply the General Finishes Flat Out Flat topcoat.
Mix baking soda with water to create a paste and apply it to the wood surface. The alkaline nature of the baking soda reacts with the tannins in the wood, resulting in a darker shade. Allow the paste to dry before wiping off the excess.
Water-based finishes, which are acrylics, give the wood no color nor do they darken as they age. They work well on lighter woods such as maple, birch or pine. If finishing a darker wood, such as walnut, mahogany or cherry, then one of the other finishes such as shellac or lacquer is better.
To stain a wood table darker, choose a darker shade of wood stain compatible with your tables wood type. Begin by sanding the table to ensure an even surface. Apply the stain evenly using a brush or cloth, following the wood grain. Allow the stain to penetrate for the recommended time before wiping off excess stain.
water based: doesnt change color of wood, dries clear and stays clear. Ideal for light colored wood. oil based: darkens the color of wood adding yellowish tone, amber tone continues to darken over time. More suited for dark color wood.
What you want to go for is a finish that is known as water-white. This means that when it dries on the surface of the wood, it wont bring any color to the party. Just about any water-based finish fits into this category. There are also water-white lacquers that work very well.
The wood is still going to darken when finish is added, but as you build coats the tones will even out more, and the more build, the better it will look.
