Higher image quality translates into more available data when it comes to photo editing, giving RAWs a definitive edge over JPEGs. Editing programs like docHub Camera RAW, Bridge, or Lightroom are built for fine-tuning RAWs into polished final photos.
So yes, you are right - RAW files are duller and not as sharp as JPGs out of the camera. But thats good, as it gives you complete control when editing. RAW files also have much more information than JPGs so your ability to edit and extract information is far greater than from a JPG.
Raw itself isnt anything until its edited and exported to another file type for printing or sharing. It has much greater flexibility in editing than jpeg. An L quality jpeg is the cameras internal edit applying whatever preset, white balance, noise reduction, etc at capture.
Higher Quality Files: RAW files retain more detail and have a higher dynamic range than JPEGs. This means you can recover details in shadows and highlights, making your images more vibrant and balanced.
Basic is the most compressed (lowest quality), Fine is the least compressed (highest quality) setting. RAW has no settings. If you want to save your image in both file formats, you can combine RAW with any kind of JPEG setting.
The age-old question remains Should I be shooting my images in RAW or JPEG?. The answer to that question really boils down to your end goal. If you are taking your camera out with the intent to capture high-quality imagery for printing purposes, RAW should always be your go-to.
The main advantage of shooting in RAW is that you end up with high-quality files to edit into the best possible image. Capturing and storing all the details that pass through your cameras sensors means RAW files contain a wider dynamic range and far greater color spectrum than JPEGs.
This means that there are no additional post production settings being applied. So, what we are seeing is both files as shot directly by the camera. Notice how the zeroed RAW file is dark and lacks contrast compared to the zeroed JPEG.
