Blending modes determine how the pigment on each layer interacts with pigment on lower layers. You can use blending modes to create effects such as glow and shadows. In Normal mode, the color is simply placed on top of the color of the layer below. This is the default blending mode.
Introduction to Photoshop Blending Modes Some are used to adjust opacity, while others darken the appearance of photos and designs. There are also blending modes that will lighten images, while others work simply to adjust contrast.
Multiply: keeps only the darker colors of the blend layer and makes light colors less opaque. The resulting color is always darker, except for where its pure white. Color Burn: uses the colors from the blend layer to darken the base layer and increases the contrast between the two.
The mix-blend-mode CSS property sets how an elements content should blend with the content of the elements parent and the elements background.
In Normal mode, the color is simply placed on top of the color of the layer below. The Darken mode compares the colors of the blending layer and the base layers, and keeps the darker colors. The Multiply mode multiplies the colors of the blending layer and the base layers, resulting in a darker color.
The mix-blend-mode applies blending to a whole element and the background-blend-mode applies blending to the background of an element. You use background-blend-mode when you have multiple backgrounds on an element and want them all to blend into each other.
The Difference mode subtracts the colors of the blending layer from the base colors, keeps the resulting value and combines it with the original base colors.
Linear Dodge produces the same visual result. Since this always produces the same or lighter colors than the input it is also known as plus lighter. A variant subtracts 1 from all end values, with values below 0 becoming black; this mode is known as plus darker.
