Use Portrait Mode: When taking a photo, use Portrait Mode and select Stage Light Mono. This will automatically darken the background and turn it black while keeping your subject illuminated. Edit in Photos App: Open the photo you want to edit, tap on Edit and select the BW filter.
In Photoshop: Adjusting layers and layer masks on them are maybe the most versatile way to go. Sometimes adjusting brightness contrast or curves are not the only viable tunings, it is possible meaningfully to turn also some color to be darker or lighter by adjusting selectively Hue saturation luminosity.

So it will do a nice job painting. And now all i have to do is again im gonna make sure this top layer is selected.
Drag the Contrast slider to the right to increase contrast or to the left to reduce contrast. Drag the Highlights slider to the left to darken and bring out detail in light areas. Drag the Shadows slider to the right to lighten and bring out detail in dark areas.
Using the background-image property with a linear gradient: To darken an image, combine a black `linear-gradient` as the front layer and the image as the back layer. Adjust the gradients opacity to control the darkening effect. Specify the front layer first in the order of `background-image`.
Set your cameras ISO to a low level, from 100 to 125. This decreases the cameras sensitivity to light, which will darken your photos background and remove unwanted texture. Adjust your shutter speed to compensate for these changes.
Create a new layer. Pick a paint brush with a nice soft edge. Set your brush colour to black. Paint away the areas you want black.
Darkening a background can be as simple as burning it in, or as complex as masking it, separating it, putting it on its own layer, or changing it altogether for a different one. Burning in is a time-honored technique for adding exposure to an area or anything you want to make darker in the picture.
