Mix a can of tinted polyurethane thoroughly. The color of the original stain and the tinted polyurethane combine, creating a darker, slightly different shade. For example, neutralize a light, warm maple with a darker oak to neutralize orange tones while deepening the furniture's color.
Yes, each layer will darken your project even more. You can also start with a lighter color Gel Stain and layer on darker colors.

Using Gel Stain, you can stain wood furniture darker without stripping the old stain AND without sanding the old finish off.
To get a darker coloring with any stain when you are wiping off the excess, sand to a coarser grit. More of the colorant will lodge in the sanding scratches, producing a darker effect. In the example here, I sanded to #100 grit (top) and #400 grit (bottom).
Many, probably most, store-bought stains are made with both dye and pigment. If wood stained with these stains is exposed to sunlight or fluorescent light for a while, the dye color will fade away, but the pigment color will remain.
To darken stained wood, you can clean and lightly sand the surface of your wood project (this is mainly to remove the finish), and then apply the new darker stain to the surface. The new stain will need to dry for several hours before applying a second coat. Although, second coats aren't always necessary.
Stains lighten as they dry, then return to their damp color when a finish is applied. So the quick method of seeing the color you'll get with the finish applied is to look at the stain while it is still damp. If you're using a satin or flat finish, however, you need to factor in the impact of the flatting agent.
