Mix a can of tinted polyurethane thoroughly. The color of the original stain and the tinted polyurethane combine, creating a darker, slightly different shade. For example, neutralize a light, warm maple with a darker oak to neutralize orange tones while deepening the furniture's color.
Sanding each board opens up the pores in the wood, allowing the stain to absorb deeper and more evenly into the board or log. Start with a rougher, coarse grit by sanding it at 80 grit, and work your way up to 220 grit. When you've finished sanding each board, vacuum the dust off.
First, what causes blotchy stain? Blotchy stain often occurs because wood unevenly absorbs stain, causing some areas to be darker than others. Blotchy stain is more likely to happen on soft woods such as pine. Stain rarely turns out blotchy on hard wood like oak.
7 Ways to Get a Darker Color Sand to a coarser grit. To get a darker coloring with any stain when you are wiping off the excess, sand to a coarser grit. ... Dirty wipe. A “dirty wipe” (right) produces a darker coloring by leaving more of the stain on the wood. ... Wet the wood before staining. ... Use dye. ... Toning.
Staining over stain is easy and works beautifully if you're applying a dark stain over a lighter stain on raw wood. This rule applies to oil-based stains, water-based stains, and gel stains.
Using Gel Stain, you can stain wood furniture darker without stripping the old stain AND without sanding the old finish off.
Leave a dampness of stain on the wood that dries to a darker coloring. It will take practice to get the coloring even, especially on large and multiple surfaces.
Yes, each layer will darken your project even more. You can also start with a lighter color Gel Stain and layer on darker colors.
Be advised that the color of your stain will be influenced by both the already existing stain and the new stain you apply, but this is typically going to make it darker, which is what we are trying to achieve unless the stain you are applying over the original stain is so light in pigment that it is almost clear.
Apply a second coat of stain after the first has dried fully. This will usually produce a darker coloring, but it adds a step to the process and slows production.
