Sand to a coarser grit. To get a darker coloring with any stain when you are wiping off the excess, sand to a coarser grit. More of the colorant will lodge in the sanding scratches, producing a darker effect.
Yes, each layer will darken your project even more. You can also start with a lighter color Gel Stain and layer on darker colors.
Be advised that the color of your stain will be influenced by both the already existing stain and the new stain you apply, but this is typically going to make it darker, which is what we are trying to achieve unless the stain you are applying over the original stain is so light in pigment that it is almost clear.
We always recommend two coats of stain for any wood project, but you should only apply as much stain as the wood can absorb. Extremely dense hardwoods may only be able to absorb one coat of wood stain. The general rule of thumb is to apply only as much as the wood can absorb.
The first coat is thin enough for the top coat or sealer to penetrate and bond to the wood fiber. If a second coat is applied, it builds the thickness and two things happen. First, the sealer or top coat cannot penetrate through the stain to grab the wood fiber.
7 Ways to Get a Darker Color Sand to a coarser grit. To get a darker coloring with any stain when you are wiping off the excess, sand to a coarser grit. Dirty wipe. A dirty wipe (right) produces a darker coloring by leaving more of the stain on the wood. Wet the wood before staining. Use dye. Toning.
To get a darker coloring with any stain when you are wiping off the excess, sand to a coarser grit. More of the colorant will lodge in the sanding scratches, producing a darker effect. In the example here, I sanded to #100 grit (top) and #400 grit (bottom).
Yes, each layer will darken your project even more. You can also start with a lighter color Gel Stain and layer on darker colors.
Using coarse sandpaper, rough up the surface of your wood board by sanding in the direction of the wood grain. This process will expose fresh wood grain, and because youre using a coarse sandpaper/sanding block, it will gouge deeper into the wood fibers which ensures a darker stain.
Yes! In fact, applying stain over stain is a fairly simple process. It works especially well if youre applying a dark stain over a lighter stain.
