birch plywood can be difficult to stain it tends to absorb seen unevenly and that leaves you with a blotchy uneven color on the wood but there are a few ways you can reduce that blotchiness and Ill try to demonstrate a few in this video the first thing I did was to sand the board to 180 grit and once that was complete I applied the first stain which was this Vera Thane oil stain its walnut color and I applied it directly to the wood with no sealer or conditioner and once I had it on I let it sit for about 10 seconds and then wiped off the excess and heres the result it looks pretty blotchy and this is typical for birch when you apply stain directly to it without any kind of a sealer or conditioner and its not a good look in my opinion in the next section of the board I first applied this pre-stain conditioner and this will help to reduce the amount of stain that the wood will absorb which will give us a less blotchy appearance and I just wiped it on and I left it on for maybe abou

Be advised that the color of your stain will be influenced by both the already existing stain and the new stain you apply, but this is typically going to make it darker, which is what we are trying to achieve unless the stain you are applying over the original stain is so light in pigment that it is almost clear.
Using Gel Stain, you can stain wood furniture darker without stripping the old stain AND without sanding the old finish off.
Mix a can of tinted polyurethane thoroughly. The color of the original stain and the tinted polyurethane combine, creating a darker, slightly different shade. For example, neutralize a light, warm maple with a darker oak to neutralize orange tones while deepening the furniture's color.
Yes, each layer will darken your project even more. You can also start with a lighter color Gel Stain and layer on darker colors.
If you are unhappy with an existing wood stain you can stain over it, provided that you are willing to go a shade darker. Applying a light stain to a dark stain will make little difference if any at all. However, choosing to stain over a light stain with a darker wood stain will work just fine.
You do not need to sand off the previous stain and finish. The purpose of the light sanding is to give a little tooth to the surface to help your new stain colour stick.
To darken stained wood, you can clean and lightly sand the surface of your wood project (this is mainly to remove the finish), and then apply the new darker stain to the surface. The new stain will need to dry for several hours before applying a second coat. Although, second coats aren't always necessary.

Leave a dampness of stain on the wood that dries to a darker coloring. This will take practice to get the coloring even, especially on large and multiple surfaces.
