Staining wood furniture darker doesn't have to be a huge project. It can actually be pretty simple! Stain typically needs to be able to soak into the wood to be able to stain it. If you put wood stain on something that isn't porous, it will just rub off, leaving only a small trace of some stain.
Staining over stain is easy and works beautifully if you're applying a dark stain over a lighter stain on raw wood. This rule applies to oil-based stains, water-based stains, and gel stains.
But good news – using the wrong wood stain color can be fixed! The easiest thing to do when you don't like your wood stain color is to grab a darker stain, and apply it on top of the initial stain job. If you don't want a darker shade, sanding down the piece and re-staining is also an option.
Yes! In addition to trying to darken or lighten a stain, you can also just change the tone of an existing stain. What is this? Much like the process of deciding on a lighter or darker stain, you can look at your existing stain and experiment to find the new tone that is right for you.
Using most gel stains, you can darken wood furniture, or stay the same color, without sanding off the old stain. But, I usually use General Finishes Gel Stain because the finish always looks beautiful.
The ideal way to fix a wood stain mistake is to sand the piece down to bare wood, and re-stain. However, this is time-consuming. Applying another layer of stain, painting the piece, or evening the piece with gel stain are other methods that could produce a satisfactory result.
To get a darker coloring with any stain when you are wiping off the excess, sand to a coarser grit. More of the colorant will lodge in the sanding scratches, producing a darker effect. In the example here, I sanded to #100 grit (top) and #400 grit (bottom).

Mix a can of tinted polyurethane thoroughly. The color of the original stain and the tinted polyurethane combine, creating a darker, slightly different shade. For example, neutralize a light, warm maple with a darker oak to neutralize orange tones while deepening the furniture's color.
