This discoloration is usually transient and disappears in a couple of weeks; however, in some people, the stain ends up being permanent.
Hemosiderin staining of the skin due to an underlying medical condition can be a sign that the condition needs better treatment or management. It's important for you and your doctor to uncover and address the cause, especially conditions such as diabetes, blood vessel disease, or high blood pressure.
Chronic Vein Disease In addition to its unsightly appearance, hemosiderin staining indicates an underlying health condition. The reddish-brown discoloration on the lower legs is caused by chronic venous disease–the abnormal function of veins.
In a normal venous system, blood travels upward towards the heart, via one-way valves. CVI occurs when these valves no longer function, causing the blood to pool in the legs. The iron in the blood leaks through the vein walls and stains the skin, creating what is known as hemosiderin staining.
For best results, it is recommended to apply AMERIGEL Care Lotion to the affected area, 2-3 times a day. The length of time required for the Hemosiderin Stains to dissipate can vary based on location, the number of accumulated iron deposits, and blood flow. A clear way to gauge success is to establish a baseline.
In some cases, sclerotherapy side effects cause hemosiderin staining as a result of iron deposits. This discoloration is often temporary and disappears in a couple of weeks, but these stains are permanent for some people.
In many cases, hemosiderin staining can be permanent. The staining alone isn't life-threatening, but it can be an indication of a more serious condition.

Hemosiderin Staining is the appearance of brownish patches above the ankles that usually occur when red blood cells break down and begin to leak iron. As the iron deposits begin to accumulate under the skin, staining in the form of patches begins to develop.
