X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) determines the surface elemental composition. The technique consists of analyzing the emitted photoelectrons after X-ray irradiation of the sample. Contrary to EDX, XPS analyzes only the surface elemental composition due to having a depth profile close to 10 nm.
The XPS binding energy of an atom is a measure of the electronic environment of the atom. Decreasing the electron density of an atom (such as a C-O bond compared with a C-C bond) increases the binding energy of the atom.
XPS physics - the photoelectric effect. can be thought of as an adjustable instrumental correction factor that accounts for the few eV of kinetic energy given up by the photoelectron as it gets emitted from the bulk and absorbed by the detector. It is a constant that rarely needs to be adjusted in practice.
Laboratory based XPS The resulting wavelength is 8.3386 angstroms (0.83386 nm) corresponding to a 1486.7 eV photon energy. Aluminum K X-rays have an intrinsic full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 0.43 eV, centered at 1486.7 eV (E/E = 3457).
How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus.
Typical Pass Energy Range: 5 eV to 300 eV. XPS instruments measure Kinetic Energies (KEs) of Photoelectrons and convert those KEs into Binding Energies (BEs) within the range: 0 eV to 1487 eV. ( for Al X-rays)
Electrostatic fields within the hemispherical analyzer (HSA) are established to only allow electrons of a given energy (the so called Pass Energy PE ) to arrive at the detector slits and onto the detectors themselves. Figure 1:Logical layout for an XPS Instrument.
Light leak or backlight bleeding is often noticeable around the edges or the sides of a screen. Especially while it is displaying a dark background or is in a dark environment. Ideally, light leakage must not be inspected in a dark room. All Dell LCD panels are inspected as per the industry standard.
