Sanding is usually the last resort and often the most effective. When trying to go from dark to light, before you strip the project and start over, try toning with a yellow toner. I prefer pigmented toners; either French yellow ochre or a chromium yellow. This is the only way I know to try to go from dark to light.
During and after construction logs can become stained from rain hitting the logs and leaving water spots as well as having black stains develop from water hitting the nails, spikes or lag screws used in construction and leaving unsightly black stains on the logs and other wood.
Blotchy stain often occurs because wood unevenly absorbs stain, causing some areas to be darker than others. Blotchy stain is more likely to happen on soft woods such as pine. Stain rarely turns out blotchy on hard wood like oak.
Get a wood bleach that contains oxalic acid. Oxalic acid is best for spot-treating wood to remove set-in stains. You can find it at most hardware stores. Oxalic acid usually comes in powder form, which you can mix in with water when youre ready to use it. This method also works for finished and unfinished wood.
Mix a teaspoon of salt with several drops of water and apply onto the wood stain in a gentle, circular motion. Wipe off the residue with a damp cloth, and youre done. Dab a little car wax on more stubborn stains using your finger to trace the water ring. Let the wax dry, and buff the wood with a soft cloth.

For the more severe marks that can occur on boards and timbers, Oxalic acid can be applied. Oxalic acid works by creating a chemical reaction with the iron stain and forming a colorless chemical complex. Perma Chinks Oxcon is an excellent Oxalic acid solution that can help you get rid of those unsightly iron stains.
Iron stain is a common discoloration found on wood. Oak, redwood, cypress, and cedar are particularly prone to iron stain because these woods contain large amounts of tannin-like extractives.
