Diffuse Pigmentation refers to the span of the pigmentation. Areas of darker skin caused by excess melanin can appear just about anywhere on the body. It covers a specified area.
A number of factors can trigger an increase in melanin production, but the main ones are sun exposure, hormonal influences, age and skin injuries or inflammation. Sun exposure is the number one cause of hyperpigmentation as its sunlight that triggers the production of melanin in the first place.
Hyperpigmentation is a common condition that makes some areas of the skin darker than others. Extra melanin creates spots or patches that look brown, black, gray, red or pink. The areas are not painful or itchy, but they can make people self-conscious.
Diffuse hyperpigmentation is also common in factory workers using dye, tar, and chromium, as well as among coal miners. Besides, agricultural workers (usage of cotton desiccant, rodenticide, and fungicide), as well as glass, ceramic, and leather workers, are prone to develop chronic arsenicosis.
There are many reasons why dark spots on bottom of feet appear. Two of the most common causes are stasis dermatitis and melanomas of the foot. While stasis dermatitis mostly arises from age and lack of activity, melanomas come from multiple sources and can happen to anyone of any age.
Common causes of hyperpigmentation include postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, solar lentigines, ephelides (freckles), and caf-au-lait macules.
Diffuse hyperpigmentation can result from drugs and also has systemic and neoplastic causes (especially lung carcinomas and melanoma with systemic involvement). After eliminating drugs as a cause of diffuse hyperpigmentation, patients should be tested for the most common systemic causes.
The biggest risk factors for general hyperpigmentation are sun exposure and inflammation, as both situations can increase melanin production. The greater your exposure to the sun, the greater your risk of increased skin pigmentation.
