In Photoshop, the Levels adjustment can be used to darken a single layer. After choosing the layer to darken, select Image Adjustments Levels. You can modify the darkness simply slid in on the input levels. Also, for more precise control, you can use the Curves adjustment.
There are three basic ways to darken images: through brightness, contrast, or saturation. Brightness refers to the presence of light; turning it down reduces the light to darken image. This is a good easy fix for overexposed (i.e., over bright) images.
The Dodge tool allows you to lighten specific areas of your image without affecting hue or saturation. Select the Dodge tool (O) . Use the Options bar to customize tool settings, like brush size, range, and exposure, to get the effect you want. Drag over the part of the image you want to lighten.
1) Start by duplicating the layer for extra safety. 2) on the layers panel, click that little icon in the bottom right and then levels. Move the leftmost slider to the right to dark the darkest values, and the middle slider to the right to darken the middle values.

Burn and Dodge tool To use these tools, simply select the tool you want to use, then set the brush you want to use and the range (Midtones, Shadows or Highlights) from the options bar. You can also change the exposure of the tool. Once youve set these, you simply brush over the area you want to lighten or darken.
Dodge and burn Dodging lightens; burning darkens. Photoshop has dedicated Dodge and Burn tools, which you can use to zero in on anything that needs lightening or darkening. Try using them to brighten the eyes in a portrait or create a darker vignette at the edges of a photo.
