An S3 ACL is a sub-resource thats attached to every S3 bucket and object. It defines which AWS accounts or groups are granted access and the type of access. You can attach S3 ACLs to both buckets and individual objects within a bucket to manage permissions for those objects.
Amazon S3 access control lists (ACLs) enable you to manage access to S3 buckets and objects. Every S3 bucket and object has an ACL attached to it as a subresource. The ACLs define which AWS accounts or groups are granted access along with the type of access.
ACLs can be set for individual objects, while IAM permissions can only be granted at the bucket level or higher. You are exclusively using the XML API or require interoperability with Amazon S3.
Bucket policies are an Identity and Access Management (IAM) mechanism for controlling access to resources.
IAM policies can only be attached to the root level of the bucket and cannot control object-level permissions. Using ACL is that you can control the access level of not only buckets but also of an object using it.
The biggest advantage of using ACL is that you can control the access level of not only buckets but also of an object using it. Whereas IAM or Bucket Policies can only be attached to buckets but not to objects in the bucket, Bucket ACLs can be assigned to buckets as well as objects in it.
What is an Amazon S3 bucket? An Amazon S3 bucket is a public cloud storage resource available in Amazon Web Services (AWS) Simple Storage Service (S3) platform. It provides object-based storage, where data is stored inside S3 buckets in distinct units called objects instead of files.
