Every paint color has a formula, and you can either lighten (add white) or darken (add black) a formula to your liking. The LRV (light reflective value) of a paint color changes slightly based on how you darken or lighten it, but theres no way to tell by how much (for reference, black is 0 and bright white is 100).
When you mix a paint color, you start out with a can of white base paint, and you drop a certain number of other colors into it. He gave us an example of a paint color being 10 drops of yellow, and 10 drops of black. To lighten any color by 50%, you would cut the number of drops in half.
* When a paint color is lightened, the LRV is also lightened. The color will be lighter, but it will not be the same color. * Another thing that will affect the color is the type of paint finish you choose also will have an effect on the colors appearance.
If your room doesnt get a lot of light because windows are sparse or its north-facing, reducing the formula by about 25 percent decreases the pigment and therefore increases the Light Reflectance Value (LRV), which, Wadden explains, makes a color look brighter to the eye.
LIGHTEN OR DARKEN A PAINT COLOR BY 25% This shift will be more or less noticeable, depending on the area of your room and the type of light it gets. Even though the change is SUBTLE, sometimes thats all you need to get the perfect color youre looking for.
