Hello, my name is Charles Zona and I would to welcome everyone to todayamp;#39;s McCrone Group webinar. Our presenter is Kent Rhodes of McCrone Associates. Kent is going to talk to us about using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, or XPS, for industrial problem solving. Before we started I will give you a bit of Kents background. Kent is the Senior Vice President and Technical Director of McCrone Associates. In addition to his management of technical surfaces at McCrone Associates, he also performs surface analysis using XPS, secondary ion mass spectrometry, and electron microprobe analysis. Kent has also taught the Scanning Electron Microscopy course here at Hooke College of Applied Sciences. Kent will field questions from the audience immediately following todayamp;#39;s presentation. This webinar is being recorded and will be available on The McCrone Group website under the webinars tab and now I will hand the program over to Kent. Hello and good afternoon. Thank you for joining u

Blue shift or hypsochromic effect can be attributed to absorption to shorter wavelength due to reduction in particle size and higher surface plasmon resonance energy.
How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus.
Here, higher binding energies mean also higher oxidation states. This is known as chemical shift. A good starting point for a literature research for the peak shifts of your material is the XPS database of NIST:
A blue shift is any decrease in wavelength, with a corresponding increase in frequency, of an electromagnetic wave; the opposite effect is referred to as red shift. Basically red shift means that frequency of phonons interacting with the incident photon decreased, blue shift means that it increased.
Doppler blueshift is used in astronomy to determine relative motion: The Andromeda Galaxy is moving toward our own Milky Way galaxy within the Local Group. When observed from earth, its light shows a blueshift. Components of a binary star system will be blueshifted when moving towards Earth.
In general, it is known that for most materials, when the XPS peak becomes higher shift, it means strong bonding with oxidation, and conversely, when the electron concentration increases, it is known that it is referred to as lower shift.
The blue curve indicates a 5-year derivative. The strength of the XPS technique relies on that the chemical environment of an atom has a pronounced effect on the assessed binding energies (BEs) of core-level electrons, the effect commonly referred to as the chemical shift [2].
As shown in Table 1, the amount of chemical shift increases as the oxidation state increases for each metal. The amount of chemical shift is also dependent on the electronegativity of the atoms surrounding the metal.
