Summarizing the Importance of Security Levels. In conclusion, the four levels of security physical, network, application, and data form a comprehensive defense against a myriad of threats. Each level plays a crucial role, and their integration is key to a resilient security posture.
From a zoomed-out perspective, the greatest difference between personal data and PII is that PII is often used to differentiate one person from another, while personal data includes any information related to a living individual, whether it distinguishes them from another individual or not.
As independent or standalone data elements, those elements are Public data. At a minimum, Personally Identifiable Information (PII) must be treated as Internal Data, and elements of PII may be classified as Sensitive, Confidential, or High Risk Data.
PII comes in two types: direct identifiers and indirect identifiers. Direct identifiers are unique to a person and include things like a passport number or drivers license number. A single direct identifier is typically enough to determine someones identity. Indirect identifiers are not unique.
Personally identifiable information (PII) uses data to confirm an individuals identity. Sensitive personally identifiable information can include your full name, Social Security number, drivers license, financial information, and medical records.
The PII confidentiality impact levellow, moderate, or high indicates the potential harm that could result to the subject individuals and/or the organization if PII were inappropriately accessed, used, or disclosed.
Personal Identifiable Information (PII) is defined as: Any representation of information that permits the identity of an individual to whom the information applies to be reasonably inferred by either direct or indirect means.
PII should be evaluated by determining its PII confidentiality impact level. PII confidentiality impact levels range from low, moderate, or high to indicate the potential harm that could result to an individual or organization if the data is compromised.
