Bleeding or spotting after a Pap smear isnt unusual, even for people without infections, cancer, or other conditions. The delicate tissues of your cervix can bleed after a brush or swab scratches the surface.
Very rarely, prolonged or heavy bleeding may occur after a Pap smear. Heavy bleeding may sometimes happen because a persons monthly period coincides with the timing of the test. However, when a period is not the cause, heavy bleeding after a Pap smear could signal an infection or another health issue.
However, bleeding usually happens due to the cervix being irritated by the test, rather than an indicator that something is wrong. A small amount of blood (also known as spotting), is normal.
Any disruption or disturbance to the cervical tissues, which may include a Pap smear, can result in additional bleeding. It is quite common for patients to experience light bleeding or spotting after a Pap smear. More severe bleeding and cramping is less common and may suggest there is a bigger issue present.
A cervical screening shouldnt affect your menstrual cycle and bring on your period early. However, its quite common to experience a little bit of bleeding or spotting in the first few hours after youve had your smear. Heavy bleeding after your smear isnt normal. If this happens, you should speak to your GP.
Period blood that looks brown is typically older, meaning it had more time to oxidize, resulting in a darker hue.1 However, sometimes, it can indicate a health concern.
Most people feel a cramping sensation during the colposcopy-taking 600mg ibuprofen (3 Advil) about an hour before can alleviate any pain you might have. You should feel well enough to resume normal activity immediately. Bleeding or brownish-black discharge is normal for several days.
