How can I tell? Lots of girls expect their blood to be bright red during their periods. But its completely normal for menstrual blood to be brownish. Its also perfectly normal for some girls to have their first period for just 2 or 3 days.
Pink or brown discharge or spotting before a period may be an early sign of pregnancy. Not every pregnant person will experience this symptom, but some do. This discharge is caused by implantation bleeding that can happen when the fertilized egg burrows into the uterus lining.
Your first period should last anywhere from 2 to 7 days. It may be very light, with just a few spots of brownish blood. Or it may start and end more brownish, but be brighter red on heavier flow days.
Its normal for period blood to be brown as well as red. Our periods are as individual as we are. Blood flow isnt exactly the same every time we have a period, especially for the first couple of years following menarche (when a girl has her first period).
Your uterine lining doesnt separate all at once. Its a slower, controlled separation and it takes time for your uterine lining tissue to make its way down through your cervix and vagina (2). This initial blood and tissue is red at first but may appear dark red or brown because it took longer to leave your body.
Some women experience brown discharge for a day or two after their period ends. Others have brown discharge that comes and goes for a week or two. It really just depends on how well your uterus sheds its lining and the speed at which it exits your body. Everyone is different.
Its considered normal for blood to vary between shades of red and brown during the first few years after menarche, or when you start having your periods. Even in later years, or as an adult, such color changes are considered normal. The color of period blood can change during the same period cycle as well.
The first day of your period might be your heaviest and the point when you notice the reddest blood. Alternatively, your flow may be slower at the start of your period, which may be why you notice darker or brown blood. A lighter flow gives blood time to be oxidized, which can lead to brown blood, explains Dr. White.
