Whether you hold both working yarns in your left hand for Continental knitting (this is my method of choice), or both in your right hand for English knitting, the dominant color is held to the left of the background color.
Stranded knitting or stranded colourwork if you like, is the technique where two colours or more is worked across a row or round to create a pattern, and where you carry along the colours not worked into a stitch on the back of your work.
If you hold one color in each hand, the easiest way to manage color dominance is to hold the Dominant Color in your left hand and strand it below the Background Color on the WS of the fabric. And vice versa hold the Background Color in your right hand and strand it above the Dominant Color on the WS of the fabric.

When working stranded colorwork with two or more colors, one color will always be more prominent on the right side of your work (the Dominant Color) while the other recedes to the background (the Background Color).
The amount of contrast between color values is also important to consider. Choosing colors with light and medium color values (medium blue and light blue) will give you a lower contrast look. Choosing colors of light and dark color values (navy blue and white) will give you a high contrast look.
