EAP-TTLS/PAP is the most insecure 802.1x Authentication Protocol because credentials are sent over the air in plaintext. This means that every time someone connects to your organizations Wi-Fi, they can be stolen over the air.
CHAP is a stronger authentication method than PAP, because the secret is not transmitted over the link, and because it provides protection against repeated attacks during the life of the link. As a result, if both PAP and CHAP authentication are enabled, CHAP authentication is always performed first.
RADIUS provides for PAP authentication, in which the RADIUS client sends a clear-text password to the RADIUS server. This clear-text password is encrypted in transit. Despite nearly three decades of analysis, there have been no vulnerabilities found with this encryption.
The RADIUS client and the RADIUS server use a shared key to authenticate RADIUS packets and encrypt user passwords exchanged between them. For security purposes, this key must be manually configured on the client and the server. RADIUS servers support multiple authentication protocols, including PPP PAP and CHAP.
The Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) provides a simple method for the peer to establish its identity using a two-way handshake. After the link is established, an ID and password pair is repeatedly sent by the peer to the authenticator until authentication is acknowledged or the connection is terminated.
The main difference between PAP and CHAP is that PAP uses a Two-Way Handshake and sends the password in clear-text form, whereas CHAP uses a Three-Way Handshake and never sends the password between the parties. As a result, CHAP is much more secure than PAP.
PAP is more susceptible to cyberattacks than CHAP because it doesnt have the built-in safeguards that CHAP has. Specifically, CHAP doesnt transmit passwords, has an ongoing authentication mechanism, and uses an encrypted calculation to help each entity verify the identity of the other.
