Unlike JPEGs which contain compressed data that was processed by the camera, RAW files consist of uncompressed and unprocessed data. As such the RAW files coming off cameras will initially look rather flat and dull and this is because they have not been processed by the camera.
But most of the time, when your photos come out too dark, your camera is either in one of the auto modes or in manual mode. When a camera is in one of the auto modes, it doesnt have all the information, like how to meter the scene. So, it has trouble in low-light situations.
This means that there are no additional post production settings being applied. So, what we are seeing is both files as shot directly by the camera. Notice how the zeroed RAW file is dark and lacks contrast compared to the zeroed JPEG.
A: RAW files are generally considered better for editing because they contain more data and allow for greater flexibility when making adjustments. JPEG files, on the other hand, have limited editing capabilities due to the compression and loss of data during processing.
Many professional photographers shoot in RAW because the format captures the highest level of detail. It can often be easier to edit exposure later with a RAW file. However, shooting in JPEG has its benefits, since their smaller file sizes allow you to shoot more images at once and transfer files faster.
Capturing and storing all the details that pass through your cameras sensors means RAW files contain a wider dynamic range and far greater color spectrum than JPEGs. If a RAW image is under or overexposed, the wider dynamic range makes recovery a lot easier, with greater control over sharpening.
There are three basic ways to darken images: through brightness, contrast, or saturation. Brightness refers to the presence of light; turning it down reduces the light to darken image. This is a good easy fix for overexposed (i.e., over bright) images.
RAW RAW files are unprocessed and un-compressed data files that contain all of the image information available to the camera sensor. Because RAW files are unprocessed, they come out looking flat and dark, as you can see above.
