They are often the result of past sun exposure. But they can also be due to some skin conditions, medications, and certain medical conditions. Often your healthcare provider or dermatologist can diagnose dark spots by looking at them. But in some cases, they may do a skin biopsy to be sure.
Any trauma to the skin, including UV and chemical exposure, heat, cuts, bruises, irritation, hair removal, and acne, can cause the inflammation that triggers the skins protective melanin response (hyperpigmentation). Hormones or genetics are the main triggers for the patches of discoloration known as melasma.
6 Home remedies Coconut oil and lemon juice. Lemons are packed with vitamin C, which may help treat hyperpigmentation. Sugar scrub. Sugar can help exfoliate the skin. Oatmeal yogurt scrub. Oatmeal can be used to treat eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions. Baking soda and water paste. Aloe vera. Potato rub.
Light brown or black skin patches may be a sign of acanthosis nigricans. This treatable skin disorder isnt contagious or dangerous. However, it can be a sign of diabetes, so talk to your healthcare provider. Often, treating diabetes (or another underlying cause) causes the skin to clear up.
Three common types of hyperpigmentation include: Sunspots, age spots, liver spots, or solar lentigines. These are different names for spots that develop because of one thingsun exposure.
Dark spots on the skin are usually not a cause for concern, but some people may choose to get rid of them for cosmetic reasons through laser treatment, microdermabrasion, and other methods. Dark spots on the skin, or hyperpigmentation, occur due to an overproduction of melanin.
There are a few reasons why a scar might turn dark. For example, if a scar was exposed to sunlight during the healing process, theres a good chance the scar tissue will become pigmented. Dark scars can also be caused by inflammation, poor healing, or the genetics of your skin and how your skin heals.
