hey welcome back dr joseph magnan with a vein specialist q a series and we have another question from the audience um similar to the previous question we answered about you know what should i do with my varicose veins if they donamp;#39;t hurt what do i do with my leg skin discoloration if itamp;#39;s not really hurting iamp;#39;ve had patients come in and they had terrible advanced venous disease with skin changes and thickening and darkening and they tell me that it doesnamp;#39;t hurt so they are convinced that they should leave it alone and i think that not although not all venous disease will progress with time we donamp;#39;t know exactly who is going to progress over time so if you have large varicose veins thatamp;#39;s not the problem thatamp;#39;s a sign of the problem the problem is inside and if you leave that disease uninvestigated and ostensibly untreated then the not just the varicose vein will get larger over time and impose a risk of bleeding or thrombos

Hyperpigmentation is a common condition that makes some areas of the skin darker than others. Extra melanin creates spots or patches that look brown, black, gray, red or pink. The areas are not painful or itchy, but they can make people self-conscious.
The biggest risk factors for general hyperpigmentation are sun exposure and inflammation, as both situations can increase melanin production. The greater your exposure to the sun, the greater your risk of increased skin pigmentation.
Of all skin cancer-related deaths, 79% are from melanoma. In this disease, cancer develops in cells (melanocytes) that produce skin pigmentation. A black or brown spot appears, typically, on the torso of males and lower legs of females. It may also form on the palm of the hands, soles of the feet and under the nails.
When a scar first develops on lighter skin, its usually pink or red. Over time, the pinkish color fades, and the scar becomes slightly darker or lighter than the color of the skin. In people with dark skin, scars often appear as dark spots.
As your skin continues to heal, the scar will flatten and change color. In time, many flat scars are nearly the same color as your skin. A flat scar may also be paler or slightly darker than your surrounding skin. Proper wound care may increase the likelihood that youll see a flat scar instead of a raised scar.
Sometimes during the scarring process, the bodys cellular process is changed by a chemical response called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. An excess of melanin moves to the injured area to speed up healing, and as a result, the surface skin becomes discolored, particularly around the edges of the original wound.
There are a few reasons why a scar might turn dark. For example, if a scar was exposed to sunlight during the healing process, theres a good chance the scar tissue will become pigmented. Dark scars can also be caused by inflammation, poor healing, or the genetics of your skin and how your skin heals.
