As I mentioned, theres LUT to create Rec709 color space for your footage but this is only one type of LUT as there are tons of them out there so if you want to know more about them and want to know how they can help you do your intended color grading, reading our blog about Color Correction and Grading in PostPace.
Flat profiles allocate more data to the shadows and highlights, where the image information is more likely to be clipped or lost, and less data to the midtones, where the human eye is more tolerant. Log profiles tend to have more contrast and color than flat profiles, but they also tend to have more noise and banding.
What is log video? Log is short for logarithmic. A log picture profile on your camera uses a different type of gamma curve than a standard profile such as Rec. 709. The benefit of shooting in log is that your video files will have a higher dynamic range.
The primary reason that raw footage appears grey and desaturated is that it is unprocessed data straight from the cameras sensor. Additionally, the cameras color profile is typically set to a neutral setting, which aims to accurately capture the scenes color information without adding any bias or adjustment.
The first time you play back your log video, you will see that it looks desaturated and flat straight out of the camera. But dont panic. Thats the way its supposed to look. The low-contrast image with washed-out colors is how your camera captures more dynamic range in your video files.
WHAT IS A LUT AND HOW DOES IT WORK? LUTs (Lookup Tables) are a kind of color filter you use to alter the colors in your image. They apply predetermined sets of mathematical formulas to your videos existing colors to change those colors and achieve a desired result.
The color on raw footage typically looks flat or dull. Again, this is by design. The color of raw footage actually is flatthat is, it was shot in a video type called flat that doesnt include a lot of the color information in a finished video file.
The big defining characteristic of LOG is its flat image profile. It looks this way because LOG retains a lot more color information than other footage types. So while LOG may not look pretty out of the box, it actually gives you much more flexibility when color correcting and color grading your footage.
