Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle doesnt pump blood as well as it should. Blood often backs up and causes fluid to build up in the lungs (congest) and in the legs. The fluid buildup can cause shortness of breath and swelling of the legs and feet. Poor blood flow may cause the skin to appear blue (cyanotic).
Cyanosis is generally a medical condition in which theres a blue tint to the skin, indicating the body is not receiving enough oxygen-rich blood.
Central cyanosis is a specific kind of cyanosis that affects patients suffering from heart or lung diseases, and certain abnormal medical conditions like methemoglobinemia and sulfhemoglobinemia. The primary indicator of a patient affected by central cyanosis is a bluish discolouration of the tongue and lips.
Central cyanosis is best seen on perioral skin, oral mucosa, or conjunctivae. Peripheral cyanosis is secondary to vasoconstriction and slow flow of normally oxygenated hemoglobin in arterial blood, allowing for greater oxygen extraction by the tissues.
Peripheral cyanosis is the bluish discoloration of the distal extremities (Hands, fingertips, toes), and can sometimes involve circumoral and periorbital areas. Mucous membranes are generally not involved. Peripheral cyanosis is rarely a life-threatening medical emergency.
Patients with cyanosis show bluish discolration of skin and mucous membranes. Common locations to look for cyanosis include tongue, buccal mucosa, lips, hands and feet.
Central cyanosis is associated with arterial desaturation and involves the skin, mucous membranes, lips, tongue, and nail beds. Peripheral cyanosis occurs when there is increased oxygen uptake in peripheral tissues; it is not associated with arterial desaturation.
Central cyanosis can be associated with life-threatening illnesses such as cardiac, metabolic, neurologic, infectious, and parenchymal and nonparenchymal pulmonary disorders. Normal infants have central cyanosis until up to 5 to 10 minutes after birth as the oxygen saturation rises to 85% to 95% by 10 minutes of age.
Central cyanosis is associated with arterial desaturation and involves the skin, mucous membranes, lips, tongue, and nail beds. Peripheral cyanosis occurs when there is increased oxygen uptake in peripheral tissues; it is not associated with arterial desaturation.
Heart valve defects that can cause cyanosis include: Tricuspid valve (the valve between the 2 chambers on the right side of the heart) may be absent or unable to open wide enough. Pulmonary valve (the valve between the heart and the lungs) may be absent or unable to open wide enough.
